We have asked some of our regular customers to curate a display of their favourite books for the shop. We’ll be updating the display, and the list on the website weekly. If you would like to buy or reserve any of these books please call the shop on 020 7229 1010, or email

Our next display is chosen by Eleonore, who has become a regular at several of our monthly book clubs, and who is French and proud (though we were surprised by how many Anglo-Saxon authors appear on her list)!

  • The Blind Assassin – Margaret Atwood
  • Mrs Bridge – Evan S. Connell
  • Madame Bovary – Gustave Flaubert
  • Dangerous Liaisons – Choderlos de Laclos
  • Who you think I am – Camille Laurens
  • In the Middle of the Fields – Mary Lavin
  • The Grass is Singing – Doris Lessing
  • Heatwave – Penelope Lively
  • Birds Of America – Lorrie Moore
  • Swann in Love – Marcel Proust
  • Bonjour Tristesse – Françoise Sagan
  • The Reader – Bernard Schlink
  • Rachel Ray – Anthony Trollope
  • Butcher’s Crossing – John Williams
  • Cold Spring Harbor – Richard Yates

About Amaryllis

Amaryllis is our bookshop blogger.

Her pen name is taken from Alice Thomas Ellis’ Other Side of the Fire, which is unfortunately and scandalously out of print. One of the funniest bits in the book is the bodice-ripper that one of the characters is writing and the female - who slays the men with one toss of her raven locks and one glance from her fiery green eyes as she strides among the glens, faithful wolfhound by her side - is Amaryllis! And the name just seemed to suit so here we are.
