A huge congratulations to Chanel Miller, whose memoir Know My Name has been awarded the 2020 National Book Critics Circle prize in the Autobiography category. The awards have been running in America since 1974 and are the only national literary awards chosen by critics themselves. The judges describe Know My Name as “offering us a rare understanding of what it means to have one’s life utterly changed by an act of violence”, adding that “well before she became a crime victim, Miller had dedicated herself to the art of storytelling; the power of her narrative structure and the lush and personable voice she achieves on the page are the result.” The full announcement and list of winners can be found here.

About Amaryllis

Amaryllis is our bookshop blogger.

Her pen name is taken from Alice Thomas Ellis’ Other Side of the Fire, which is unfortunately and scandalously out of print. One of the funniest bits in the book is the bodice-ripper that one of the characters is writing and the female - who slays the men with one toss of her raven locks and one glance from her fiery green eyes as she strides among the glens, faithful wolfhound by her side - is Amaryllis! And the name just seemed to suit so here we are.
