Amaryllis goes to [REDACTED]

I was on holiday last week with my sister Agapanthus and our respective children. We were in Wales but I’m not going to say where because I want to keep it all to myself because it is beautiful and unspoiled. I never understand those articles that broadcast favourite undiscovered places; the whole point is that nobody else knows about them!
Anyway, there wasn’t a great deal of time for reading and I am now catching up on Peaky Blinders but I was very struck by the following books
Coventry by Rachel Cusk – this has just hit the book shelves; a book of essays that covers everything from rudeness to St Francis of Assisi and I wish I had read her piece on the teenage years 10 years ago! The writing is so cool and engaging and full of really interesting snippets of information.
The Offing by Benjamin Myers – This is a quiet and beautiful story of one summer and a chance meeting with an eccentric older woman that alters the course of life for a sixteen year old boy. Also some of the most marvellous descriptions of food I have ever read!

About Amaryllis

Amaryllis is our bookshop blogger.

Her pen name is taken from Alice Thomas Ellis’ Other Side of the Fire, which is unfortunately and scandalously out of print. One of the funniest bits in the book is the bodice-ripper that one of the characters is writing and the female - who slays the men with one toss of her raven locks and one glance from her fiery green eyes as she strides among the glens, faithful wolfhound by her side - is Amaryllis! And the name just seemed to suit so here we are.
